  1. Happy b-day to the my biggest source of inspiration! I hope you have a lovely day!

    Kindest Regards,
    Simone, Amsterdam

  2. Happy Belated Birthday, Dr. Silvia!

Your mission and documentary are wonderful and should be part of our school education programs. I have been diving since 1993 and have also noticed bleaching and damage which is so sad.. I still can’t believe the loss of life and wasteful cruelty to sharks due to fining. I don’t understand why governments can’t put an end to it.

As I live in Houston, the Texas Flower Gardens and Stetson Banks are near and I was out there recently. As far as I know, they are protected but oil spills are a constant threat.

Please keep up the great work to raise awareness. I just shared your link on Facebook and hope in some way that your work and love for our oceans will go viral in time to reverse the damage being done.

  3. Not sure if today is really ur Bday..but I woke up in the middle of the night and had to watch Mission Blue.
Now, I am re- inspired to try and make a difference. It is my belief, that we need to show this movie in all the public schools, not only America ,but the World.
If we can inform the young people of the World The Truth, I believe , they will be inspired to save it. How, to educate the people, that is the question.

  4. Wishing you a Very Happy Birthday Sylvia and many more to come. Thank you for your inspiration and passion!

Just wanted to say Happy Birthday the best way we know how and that is this – Your legacy caught us on fire to DO Something Powerful. To live a life of significance and to teach and inspire others to do the same. Sylvia you mattered and because you did we will too. One message and relationship at a time.

  8. Dear Sylvia,
I hadn’t heard of you until today when ironically I woke early and got to the television before my kids. I came across your documentary Mission Blue.

I sat through it fascinated by the story of our oceans, and your incredible life story. I am inspired!

My kids – one son and one daughter will be watching it soon. No doubt you will leave the same everlasting impression on them and I hope will also serve as a role model to my daughter (12) in terms of what women can accomplish.

Congratulations on a life time of remarkable work to preserve our oceans and more importantly to create the necessary awareness that all humans need!

    Happy birthday.

  9. Wow – you are an inspiration – to think that one woman can save our oceans!!! Thank you so much for educating humanity – let’s hope that HOPE will prevail!

  10. Happy Birthday, Dr. Earle! We watched the Mission Blue film today, and it is a wonderful and heartbreaking movie. I hope that many more people around the world watch, and more importantly, take action to save the oceans.

  11. Just happened to watch the Mission Blue documentary today and visited the website – how ironic it turned out to be your birthday! What an incredible inspiration you are that has made a critical impact on the world. Happy birthday to an amazing life-long explorer!

  12. By the way, in addition to my previous birthday message, you can learn about what I’ve been doing for the last 2 decades and some of the reason why I’m so inspired by Sylvia via my TED talk: http://on.ted.com/j07ad and Big SHFT documentary: http://www.shft.com/watching/the-big-shft-mike-biddle-plastics-pioneer/ and 8 page Popular Science profile: http://www.popsci.com/article/science/garbage-man

  13. Happy Birthday Sylvia!

I watched Mission Blue this past Tuesday on the eve of my 55th birthday. I wasn’t feeling too good about turning 55. However, after watching Mission Blue and seeing your enthusiasm for, and approach to, life, and finding out you were just 3 days shy of 24 years older than me, I kept thinking about how much you must have accomplished since your 55th birthday. That made me realize that the adventure and joy of being alive does not end in one’s mid 50s or 60’s or 70’s or beyond for that matter, it ends when we stop engaging with this miraculous, if troubled, world in meaningful ways. You are truly an inspiration! Thank you for the passion and dedication you bring to trying to preserve as much of our natural world as possible and through that all of us.

All is not lost, as as long as we have Hope(Spots)!

  14. Happy Birthday and THANK YOU SYLVIA. COINCIDENTALLY, WE JUST WATCHED MISSION BLUE THIS EVENING!

I met Sylvia briefly at an Economist World Ocean Summit event in Singapore and Marcus Eriksen stayed at my home in Walnut Creek when he was working on creating a bust of Sylvia last year and filming it.

I am the founder of MBA Polymers, a world leading plastics recycling company, and I’m working with pioneers around the world to help clean up the oceans and keep waste out of the oceans – particularly plastics.

Sylvia, we just watched Mission Blue this evening with our family. My 9 year old son already wanted to be a Marine Biologist and 13 year old daughter an environmental engineer – and your movie sealed their fate. They are committed to helping the planet and especially helping the oceans. Thank you for your incredibly dedication and your ability to inspire ALL of us!

I hope I can meet you again sometime here in the Bay Area.

With much admiration and gratitude for who you are and for living a life that matters so that others may as well, Mike Biddle

  15. The title says shhhhhhh, but I’m saying Happy Birthday anyway!! I just came to this site as the credits are rolling on the Mission Blue documentary. It was very moving and eye-opening. I wish I could do more to help! If there are any other video projects being made in LA to support this cause I would love to donate my time on them! Thank you! I hope Sylvia is enjoying her birthday. 🙂

  17. Happy Birthday Dr. Sylvia!!!!!! You are my personal hero and inspiration and when I go to college I want to study marine science so I can help the oceans, like you!! I know you are very busy, and I’m sure you get a lot of fan mail, but if you ever get the letters I wrote you, it would be beyond amazing and a total dream come true if you wrote me back!! I wish I could meet you!!

  18. Happy birthday dr. sylvia earle, i loved your movie! My Uncle is Peter Livingston, and I hope to be like you when I grow up!

Love, Grace Horn – Age 9 – Old Greenwich, Ct.

  19. Dear Dr. Sylvia,
My mom and I just watched your documentary Mission Blue. Your love for the ocean only increases my love for it too.

I am almost 9 years old and I am very interested in becoming a marine biologist. I spend many summer days exploring the shores of our beaches in NY. Last year, I spent the summer in Italy, right off the Mediterranean Sea, a great place to study marine life. Everyone called me “piccolo pesce” or little fish because I never came out of the water or stopped looking for sea life. Next year, I plan to learn how to scuba dive. Then I can do more exploring.

My love for marine biology began when I was 5, after watching documentaries on the colossal squid. What a mysterious creature it is!! I’d love to study it more. And how many other amazing ones there must be down there.

I want to help you save the oceans too or no one will be able to explore these wonders ever again (including me!).

I wish you a happy birthday with many more years of beautiful blue adventures.

    Michaela

  20. Happy Birthday Sylvia!

I’m a Marine Biologist from the Canary Islands. My mother and you are a big inspiration for me. Thats why I wish you all the best 🙂

Thanks for make possible a world a little bit better.

    Best wishes,

    Daniel
