In the Wake of Black Friday and Cyber Monday — Giving Tuesday
November 27, 2012
Today is being called the first-ever “Giving Tuesday.” The idea started in New York City, in an attempt to harness the same collective attention given to Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Only Giving Tuesday is devoted to giving rather than getting.
Nonprofit organizations are hoping they can use the popularity of this past weekends consumer craze to remind people to give back. While this is the first year of Giving Tuesday, the idea of harnessing the collective attention on giving back is something that seems to be catching on. High profile individuals including Chelsea Clinton, Bill Gates and Mandy Moore have already publically offered their support of Giving Tuesday, while the phrase has been trending over the last few days within social media channels.
Mission Blue is hopeful that the newly dubbed Giving Tuesday sparks action and brings awareness to important organizations, issues, and actions. Today, we are challenging all of our followers to take action whether it is through a donation to a nonprofit like Mission Blue, offering a random act of kindness, or giving thanks to the individuals, projects and or groups you are thankful for. So, what will you do this Giving Tuesday?
