Photo of the Day: An Adolescent Adélie Penguin - Mission Blue

It might look like this adolescent Adélie penguin is having a bad hair day, but in fact this youngster is in the middle of molting its downy coat. After only four weeks, Adélie penguin chicks molt their fluffy coat they were born with and grow the dense, waterproof feathers that allow them to leave the rocky shores where they were born and begin their lives feeding for themselves.

Did you know:  Adélie penguins breed on the rocky Antarctic coastline where they build nests out of small stones.
