Photo of the Day: Monuriki Island
November 23, 2012
This photo was taken on the beach of Monuriki Island, Fiji — a small, uninhabited island within a group of islands known as the Mamanucas.
The marine environment of Fiji comprises a range of distinct ecosystems that contain some of the most diverse and significant marine habitats, species and processes in the world. Fish, crabs, lobsters, shrimp, sharks, sea snakes, turtles (green, hawksbill, leatherback, and olive ridley turtles), giant clams and many other marine creatures all call Fiji’s waters home. Important marine habitats including estuaries, mangroves, wetlands, sea grass, macro algal assemblages and coral reefs provide essential breeding grounds and migratory routes for numerous marine species.
Today, growing local and global pressures threaten the health of marine species and ecosystems found just off Monuriki Island and throughout Fiji.
