Led by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Mission Blue unites a global coalition to inspire support for a worldwide network of marine protected areas – Hope Spots, with the goal of reaching at least 30% ocean protection by 2030. Today, we are delighted to welcome philanthropist, ocean advocate and sportswoman, Dona Bertarelli to our board of directors and to the Mission Blue family.

Ms. Bertarelli is a world-renowned expert in ocean conservation who has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to ocean stewardship from a variety of perspectives. She is co-chair of the Bertarelli Foundation, and joined forces with the Pew Charitable Trusts in 2017, continuing their long-term collaboration and forming a new partnership, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, to advance ocean protection, perfectly aligning with the goals of Mission Blue.  Ms. Bertarelli launched Global Fishing Watch Marine Manager as a useful tool for the creation, management, monitoring and stewardship of marine protected areas. She also serves as the Special Adviser for the Blue Economy to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and a Patron of Nature of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Says Ms. Bertarelli, “I have always loved the ocean and it was a huge inspiration when I first met Dr. Sylvia Earle many years ago. Learning about Sylvia’s work to advance ocean awareness and science shaped my commitment to ocean conservation. The science is clear, marine protected areas help protect and restore biodiversity, enable the ocean to be more resilient to threats, and secure the food and livelihoods of billions of people who rely on a healthy ocean. My own work like that of Sylvia and Mission Blue, supports the global call to fully or highly protect at least 30% of our planet by 2030.”

An accomplished sailor, Ms. Bertarelli has spent long periods offshore, deepening her love and respect for the sea. She is the co-founder of Spindrift, a professional multihull sailing team based in France, as well as of Sails of Change, which shines a light on the importance of ensuring a sustainable balance between nature and people.

“As the woman who set the record for deepest untethered dive, I am delighted to welcome the woman who is the fastest to sail around the world to the Mission Blue board. Dona Bertarelli will be an invaluable resource to our organization considering her extensive experience in so many aspects of ocean conservation. We hope that by working closely with creative changemakers such as Dona, we can further develop strategies to move hearts and minds across the globe to act while there is still time to turn the tide towards a healthy ocean,” says Mission Blue Founder, Dr. Sylvia Earle.
